6 Essential Oral Care Tips for a Healthy Smile

Oral hygiene is an important aspect of overall health that is often overlooked. Taking care of your teeth and gums can prevent several dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. DR. PLOTKA’S MOUTHWATCHERS share these six tips for maintaining good oral health.

1. Brush and floss regularly: It is recommended by the ADA (American Dental Association) to brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day with a toothbrush that has soft bristles, at a 45-degree angle against the gumline1; and floss (or another interdental cleaner) once a day2 to remove plaque and food particles that can cause cavities and gum disease.

Use Dr. Plotka’s antimicrobial toothbrushes with flossing soft bristles to gently clean your teeth and gums! Don’t forget to pair with our 100% naturally sourced whitening toothpaste for a winning smile!

2. Visit your dentist regularly: It is important to see your dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings to treat dental issues and prevent any problems early. Cleanings can help remove plaque buildup and reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease. Your dentist can also provide advice on how to properly care for your teeth and gums. Did you know, that Mouthwatchers was founded over 15 years ago by Dr. Ronald Plotka, DDS., a nationally renowned dentist with over 40 years of leadership in dentistry. 3. Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks: Try to make healthy choices to support strong teeth and healthy gums through calcium rich foods and foods rich in fiber. Sugary and acidic foods and drinks can erode tooth enamel and cause cavities. Here’s a quick tip: If what you’re eating or drinking is citrus or citrus-flavored, carbonated or sour, it’s best to limit how much you consume3. You can help protect your teeth from erosion by waiting an hour after eating acidic food before brushing your teeth, which allows your saliva to naturally wash away acids and re-harden enamel3. Additionally, using a straw when consuming acidic beverages can help minimize contact with teeth3; and finally rinse your mouth with water or consume foods that are calcium-rich to neutralize acids and protect your enamel3, to help avoid any setbacks in your dental care.

4. Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol consumption: Tobacco use can lead to a host of oral health problems, including gum disease, tooth loss and oral cancer. Limiting alcohol consumption can also help prevent dry mouth and other oral health issues.

5. Practice good oral hygiene: In addition to brushing & flossing, it’s important to practice good oral hygiene habits like using mouthwash, cleaning your tongue, replacing your toothbrush, as noted below, and drinking plenty of water. These habits can help keep your mouth clean & fresh and prevent dental issues from rising.

6. Regularly replace your toothbrush: It is recommended by the ADA (American Dental Association) that you should replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months or more often if the bristles are visibly matted or frayed.

Dr. Plotka’s toothbrush bristles are silver infused and naturally antimicrobial, which helps eliminate 99% of microbes (bacteria, viruses, fungi) within 6 hours after use. In addition, these bristles are made from polyester, which is superior to the traditional nylon bristles, lasting up to 33% longer, meaning you can keep your brush fresh for up to 4 months!

By following these oral care tips, you can help protect your teeth and gums for years to come. Remember, good oral health is an essential part of overall health and well- being, so make it a priority in your daily routing to keep your smile healthy and bright.
